We visited it at first light
before the crowds had spread throughout the grounds
We watched the first pink light change to dawn
Then we visited the shrine
and walked around the terraces
There were many locals present
as well as tourists
We could see the ferry crossing the Yamuna River
By now the light was stronger...
Did you know there is a mosque in the grounds
with a mirror-image twin to preserve symmetry
which is not a mosque, since it is not aligned towards Mecca
The buildings are sheathed in statues...
Walls of statues tower towards the sky
Most of the statues are of classic style
like the dancer with a thorn in her foot.
But the place is known for the statues with earthier themes.
Like the illustrations of this cheerful gang...
.. who had a few quaint pastimes...
... but mostly showed style...
... and a spirit of friendly cooperation.
There are no felt-tips or aerosols at Khajuraho.
See, graffiti by fully-qualified stonemasons!
